Listen to Him!

Writer: Chris BraggChris Bragg

This Sunday, we stand at the threshold of Lent, ushered in by one of the most radiant moments in Scripture—the Transfiguration of Christ. Jesus, dazzling in divine glory, is revealed to Peter, James, and John on the mountaintop. They see him not as a mere reflection of God’s presence, like Moses with his shining face, but as the very source of divine light itself.

And yet, the most important moment is not the dazzling sight but the voice from the cloud: “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”

Why do we begin our Lenten journey here? Because the light of Christ is not meant to stay on the mountain—it is meant to guide us down into the wilderness, into the work of prayer, discernment, and transformation.

Like Moses, who ascended Sinai to speak with God and returned bearing God's commandments, we are called to enter into communion with Christ, to listen, and to be changed. Lent is not just about giving things up; it is about making space to hear God's voice more clearly. It is a season of deep prayer and reflection, of seeking to align our lives with God’s will.

The Transfiguration is a reminder that the glory of God is not something distant, nor is it meant to be hoarded. It is meant to be carried with us. As we step into Lent, may we take time to listen—to Christ in Scripture, in prayer, in one another—and allow that listening to shape us, so that we, too, may reflect his light in the world.

The light is not meant to stay on the mountain. It is meant to shine through us.
